About Woodford W.I.

Woodford W.I. was founded in 1939 so right at the start of the WW2.  In our archives we have minutes of meetings from the war years and they give an insight into how tough those times were and the efforts of the members in supporting the local community and the armed forces and each other. The times may change but the ethos of the WI is still as strong as ever in Woodford W.I.

We are a traditional W.I. in that we sing Jerusalem at the beginning of our monthly get together. This is a tradition that started in 1924 and it marks our links with the wider women's movement plus it had been used by the National Union of Suffrage Societies in the 1918 celebrations of women's enfranchisement.

Our members are a diverse group made up of women who have worked in a variety of professions. Many of our members have relocated to Cheshire as a result of their or their partner's career. The W.I. has enabled them to meet people and make friends.

Our primary aim is to educate and we do this in many ways whether it is practical skills via our various groups or softer skills like committee work or public speaking. We always learn something from our various speakers. We're not one dimensional at Woodford W.I.

Joining any organisation is taking a step into the unknown but the difficult part is walking through the door. We can assure you that there will be someone to greet you and make you feel welcome. You can come and visit us twice without having to join.

Woodford W.I. is a place to come and make friends, have fun and get the opportunity to pick up new skills. Come and visit us. You're sure of a friendly welcome.
